Why do you need to know the Bible? So that you can discern when a preacher, Torah-teacher, or scholar is explaining the text or explaining his speculation of the meaning of the text. Speculation is the contemplation or consideration of a particular subject. A teacher or preacher will read the text and then speculate on different aspects of that Scripture. He will (hopefully) do exegesis or analysis of the text, cross-reference with other Scriptures on the same subject, and form a conclusion based on what he discerns. His conclusion, however, may be wrong. He may have missed something, or chosen a poor source or did a mistranslation or misapplication. As a Torah Teacher, if I dare call myself that, I have had clarify or correct my conclusions to those who choose to listen to me and it is a humbling experience. My conclusion was wrong, not the text.
Where teachers and believers alike get into trouble more than anywhere else is prophecy. Understand this that the text is prophecy, not the conclusions and applications of the teacher or reader. Basing plans or creating new doctrine based on the speculations of teachers is how religions are made. What's more, it is also how splits and divisions within those religions happen.
Prophecy is meant have us do one thing and one thing only.
Since everything is going to be destroyed like this, what kind of people should you be? You should lead holy and godly lives, as you wait for the Day of God and work to hasten its coming.
2 Peter 3: 11-12 CJB
Why study prophecy? To lead you to be more holy and godly in your walk with the Messiah. Until a particular prophecy is fulfilled, we will never have a complete picture or a complete answer. Until then, everything but what is written in the text is a speculation. The people of Israel at the time of the Messiah speculated that He would overthrow the Romans and restore Israel to its former glory. They based that speculation off of prophecy and while we await that prophecy to be fulfilled, we now know in retrospect HOW He planned to fulfill that prophecy and how He did just that.
“Human being, I have appointed you to be a watchman for the house of Isra’el. When you hear a word from my mouth, you are to warn them for me." Ezekiel 3:17 CJB
We have been warned by many watchmen who have seen the End to return to YHVH because the Great and Terrible Day is coming soon. Prophecy will not make you blameless or pure. Prophecy warns what will befall you if you are not.
"For ‘Ezra had set his heart on studying and practicing the Torah of YHVH and teaching Isra’el the laws and rulings." Ezra 7:10 CJB
